Perinatal Mental Health
What is perinatal mental health?
Maternal or Perinatal Mental Health (PMH) disorders, such as postpartum depression, anxiety, and psychosis, are the most common complications of pregnancy and a leading cause of maternal mortality. They affect 1 in 5 mothers and 1 in 10 fathers, yet 75% don't receive proper care, despite the proven benefits of early intervention. Black, Indigenous, people of color and marginalized communities are disproportionately impacted, and this crisis is worsened by climate change and environmental racism.
Personal story
My commitment to this issue is deeply personal as a postpartum psychosis survivor. In 2016, despite having excellent healthcare and a strong education, my risk factors weren’t screened and my providers weren’t trained to recognize the signs when I went without sleep for days after childbirth. At a leading hospital, I fell through the cracks of the perinatal health system with a traumatic experience that took years to heal from, with no follow-up support from my health insurance. While I’m deeply privileged, my experience highlights a systemic failure affecting all birthing people, especially Black and marginalized communities. That’s why I joined the Board of Maternal Mental Health NOW and became a California Fellow with the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health—to ensure no one else faces what I did.
Making an impact
Through storytelling, coalition-building and advocacy, I’m working to ensure that perinatal mental health is recognized as a critical part of reproductive healthcare. In October 2024, I co-organized From Pain to Power: A Postpartum Mental Health Convening on Storytelling and Policy Change, where nearly 200 gathered to raise awareness, break stigma, and drive community-led advocacy to transform the perinatal mental health system. I’ve shared my story on Spectrum News, in the short documentary The Imperfect Mothers Club, and at the Storyectomy* Baby Bumps Comedy Show to break stigma and uplift the need for perinatal mental health reform. I co-founded the California Coalition for Perinatal Mental Health & Justice to build support for SB 626 (D- Smallwood-Cuevas) and help create a future where equitable, comprehensive mental health care is available for all birthing people in California.
